Bic Tieu Bio
Bic Tieu is a designer, object maker, and jeweller, as well as a lecturer at the School of Art and Design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Her work explores how objects act as vessels for stories, cultures, and knowledge, drawing on both traditional and contemporary craft and design methods.
With a strong foundation in her Asian cultural heritage, Bic’s practice investigates themes of personal and cross-cultural narratives. Specialising in traditional and contemporary metal and lacquer craft techniques, her work often blends these materials to offer fresh perspectives on object-making and the meanings embedded in those objects. Recent projects focus on cartographic explorations of the 'in-between,' creating new cultural objects that reflect hybrid identities and diasporic life experiences. Through her practice, Bic aims to foster a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, particularly within the Asia-Australia context.
Bic's design and jewellery education began at UNSW Art & Design, where she completed a Bachelor of Design (2003) and a Master of Design (Honours) (2007). Her practice was further honed through professional training at the renowned Japanese lacquer studio Kitamura Koubou (2009–2011), and more recently with Japanese contemporary metal master Toru Kaneko and lacquer artist Hikoju Maki-e (2018). She also holds a PhD from the Australian National University (2022) in Jewellery and Object Design from the School of Art & Design.
Bic is actively involved in exhibitions, talks, and workshops at both local and international cultural institutions and conferences. She has conducted studio masterclasses, participated in numerous residency programs, and received awards and grants from organisations including the National Association for the Visual Arts, Asialink, The Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Design Centre, UNSW, and the Australian National University.
As a lecturer at UNSW Art & Design, Bic shares her knowledge and expertise with students, guiding the next generation of designers and makers. She has also served as the Newsletter Curator for the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (JMGA-NSW).
